BEIJING, -- China's Ministry of Science and Technology said Saturday it has made a major breakthrough in plasma display panel technology.

A ministry official said Chinese companies have successfully developed 34-inch shadow mask PDP high-definition and united-color monitors, Xinhua, China's main government-run news agency, reported Saturday.

The official also said 42-inch display technology was being researched.

Xinhua said the technology creates an opportunity for Chinese companies to catch up with the world pace of developing low cost PDP products and improve global competitiveness.
