Samsung LCD sales drop 23% in 3Q as ASP declines

Sales and operating profits of Samsung Electronics’ TFT-LCD division plunged 23% and 72%, respectively, in the third quarter of 2004 since its panel ASPs (average selling prices) had fallen by 21%, according to a company report issued today.

Demand for large-size panels had been low since prices had been high, and panel makers had been aggressively expanding capacity, the report said. Hence, Samsung’s large-size panel prices dropped 21% during the third quarter, with prices of panels for LCD monitors, notebooks and LCD TVs declining 23%, 16% and 26%, respectively, the company added.
